After a selfish L.A. yuppie learns his estranged father left a fortune to an autistic-savant brother in Ohio that he didn't know existed, he absconds with his brother and sets out across the country, hoping to gain a larger inheritance.

Rain Man is a 1988 drama directed by Barry Levinson and starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.

The film tells the story of Charlie Babbitt (Cruise), a brash and self-centered entrepreneur, who, following the passing of his distant father, is shocked to learn that his multimillion-dollar estate has been left to his unknown autistic savant brother, Raymond (Hoffman).

Rain Man premiered at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear, the festival's highest prize. It was released theatrically on December 16, 1988, to both critical and commercial success. The film later became the highest-grossing film of 1988, and received eight nominations at the 61st Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
