The film is based on the 1988 nonfiction book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia by Joseph D. Pistone and Richard Woodley. It is the true story of how an FBI undercover agent infiltrated the Bonanno crime family during the 1970s under the alias Donnie Brasco, who cons his way into the good graces of a Mafia hitman.
The film was released on February 28, 1997 by TriStar Pictures, and was considered a critical and box office success, earning $124.9 million, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
